Blame the economy on hormones?
By Anita |
When I don’t feel like blaming myself for my problems, pretty much every problem I have can be blamed on one of these four things:
1. Hormones.
2. The children.
3. The hubster.
4. Vista.
So I was intrigued to see that this New Scientist story blames hormones for woes in the financial markets: “Research from the University of Cambridge suggests that the movements of money in the financial markets are correlated to stock traders’ levels of two hormones: the steroids testosterone and cortisol.”
When the traders made money, they had elevated levels of testosterone. When they lost money, they had elevated levels of cortisol.
Here’s my favorite part of the article: “So both the short- and the long-term effects of the hormones can contribute to the overall health of the markets. ‘Maybe bubbles and crashes are coming from these steroids,’ Coates says. While it may be that less money would be made, ‘maybe if more women and older men were trading, the markets would be more stable.’” [Emphasis mine, of course.]
